Number Classification - Choosing Odd Numeral Pair

Classification means to analyse the items of a given group on the basis of a certain criteria they agree or satisfy and then spot the stranger or odd one out. In these types of questions we are given a group of certain items, out of which one of the item does not satisfy the common rule which all the other items follow. All except one are similar to one another in some manner. The candidate is required to choose this one item which does not fit into the given group or we can say the candidate supposed to find the item which is odd for that group.

Number Classification :Choosing the odd Numeral Pair/ Group: In these type of questions, certain pairs/groups of numbers are given out of which all except one are similar in some manner while one is different. The numbers in these similar pairs/groups may have the same property or may be related to each other according to the same rule. The candidate is required to choose the odd pair/group.

Example 1 : Choose the odd pair among these 73-61, 69-57, 42-29, 47-35

(a) 73 - 61       (b) 69 - 57       (c) 42 - 29      (d) 47 - 35

Answer: (c)

Explanation : When we analyse the pairs we see that

 Difference between the pair i.e. 73-61 = 12

 Difference between the pair i.e. 69-57 = 12

 Difference between the pair i.e. 42-29 = 13

 Difference between the pair i.e. 47-35 = 12

Hence in all pairs except 42-29  , the difference between the two numbers is 13.  So option (c) is odd one out.

Example 2 :   Choose the odd pair among these 5 - 50, 8 - 128, 11 - 242, 15 - 375

(a) 5 , 50        (b) 8 , 128       (c) 11 , 242      (d) 15 , 375

Answer: (d)

Explanation : When we analyse the pairs we see that

In the pair 5-50 we see that 5^2times 2= 25times2=50

In the pair 8-128 we see that 8^2times 2= 64times2=128

In the pair 11-242 we see that 11^2times 2=121times2= 242

In the pair 15-375 we see that 15^2times 2= 225times2= 450 which is not equal to 375 hence is the odd pair.

Example 3 : Choose the odd pair among these

(a) 7,343    (b)  11, 1331    (c) 12, 1728    (d) 14, 196

Answer : (d)

Explanation : When we analyse the pairs we see that

343 is the cube of 7.

1331 is the cube of 11.

1728 is the cube of 12.

196 is the square of 14.

So, the pair of 14,196 is the odd pair.

Example 4 : Choose the odd pair among these

(a) 12,36          (b)16, 48           (c) 18, 54             (d) 21, 64

Answer : (d)

Explanation : When we analyse the pairs we see that

12X3 = 36

16X3 = 48

18X3 = 54

21X3 = 63

So, the odd pair is 21,64.

Example 5 : Choose the odd pair among these

(a) 1,7    (b) 3,11        (c) 13,16       (d) 19, 23

Answer : (c)

Explanation : In the given pairs,

1 and  7 both are odd numbers.

3 and 11 both are odd numbers.

13 is odd number but, 16 is even number.

19 and 23 both are odd numbers.

So, the odd pair is 13,16.

Example 6 : Choose the odd pair among these

(a)  23, 552   (b)  26, 702      (c) 28, 812         (d) 32, 1088

Answer : (d)

Explanation : In the given pairs,

23, 23X24 = 552

26, 26X27 = 702

28, 28X29 = 812

32, 32X33 = 1056 but 32X34 = 1088.

So, the odd pair is 32,1088.
